Although the Monument Geyser Basin hike is only about 2.5 miles (four kilometres) round trip, you gain 700 feet (213 metres) in the 1.25 miles that you are climbing up a small hill to get there! In contrast, the hike to Utah's Delicate Arch is only 480 feet (146 metres). The Monument Geyser Basin trail starts next to the Gibbon River, and the initial portion is flat and delightful, as you walk under some trees, next to the river. Don't be fooled! The taxing part of the trail is literally just around the corner as you climb up the hill to the top. You'll find when you get there that a visit to Monument Geyser Basin is very different to the other basins you may have visited. There are no boardwalks, no fences, no barricades and no rangers telling you where you can't go. Many times when we go there, there aren't other people there either. Your guide will explain to you how to stay safe in this potentially dangerous environment as we explore the thermal features at the top. There are also expansive views from up high, in multiple directions, including down the Gibbon River towards Madison Junction, and over Gibbon Meadows to the towering Gallatin Mountain Range. Please take a look at the two videos we have of this hike. One shows just the highlights of the Monument Geyser Basin hike, while the other video details the entire Monument Geyser Basin trail.
